KUKA Compose, Robot Selector
UI/UX Design, 2019 - KUKA Robotics
KUKA supplies industrial robots for factories across the globe, most notably in Germany. Among their clients are car manufacturers, such as Daimler, and medical facilities.

As an in-house designer at KUKA, I was the lead designer for Robot Selector, a part of the KUKA Compose experience that eases the process of selecting, analyzing, and programming robots. My tasks were to:

redesign the initial version to accommodate adding additional payloads for analysis

re-format the PDF reports to focus more on the data

design concepts for a mobile app

I worked with a squad of a product manager, back-end developer, front-end developer, and tech doc writer to launch it in October 2019.
Main Problems
Adding the main payload data for each robot was cumbersome. The current layout didn't work well for adding additional separate payloads.
The initial layout was fine for simple analyses with one load case. But it wasn't designed for adding more complex payload data.

The report visual design didn't match the design of the product.
My goal was to create an intuitive and visually cohesive experience for users to test payloads on a robot before purchasing.
Adding Payloads Experience
The initial design worked well for simple analyses and payloads. Also pictured above was the precursor to KUKA Compose, KUKA.Load. But if users wanted to add more complex loads, they couldn't get an accurate result.

I iterated on a some different options for adding supplemental loads, while aiming to keep the experience intuitive and easy to understand for an engineer.
The Final Design and Experience
Users first choose the relevant parameters to select robots for their application. They can select up to three to compare.
For the final design, I organized all editable data on the left and the results on the right to make it consistent with the paradigm on the filters page. Additional loads were listed in a separate tab to make it clear that they were different from the main load and more detailed images were added to better visualize the analysis.

Analysis Reports Design
​In order to get approval to use the selected robots, users need to download and submit a report and sign-off sheet to KUKA. We also wanted to redesign this report so that it would visually match the new design for KUKA Compose.

We also wanted to try to reduce the amount of pages in the report for all the data.
Below are some of the report iterations done to match the style of the app.
Final Report Design
For the final design, I removed all images since they were unnecessary and I prioritized the data. I then optimized the charts for size and readability to use the space as efficiently as possible.
